Licenses Reported Out of Committee: Let’s Get on the Phones!!

The Work and Family Mobility Act was reported favorably out of the Joint Transportation Committee!

As of this afternoon, we’re taken a historic step forward for this state: the Work and Family Mobility Act, which would ensure drivers’ licenses for all in our state, was reported favorably out of the Joint Transportation Committee! This is HUGE step forward for undocumented communities across Massachusetts. The finish line is in sight, but there is still a long way to go and this moment is critical. It is likely that the bill will come to a vote between Tuesday and Thursday.

Read on for actions you can take today and early next week to ensure our legislators keep up their promised support for the bill.

Monday: Call and Email Your Legislators!

Even if you already know your legislator is supportive of this bill, give them a call now to express gratitude, support for the bill in its current form, and encourage them VOTE YES. If they’ve been on the fence or resistant, your call is especially important now!  Look here to see if your legislator is a co-sponsor.

How to call:

A script, which you can customize according to your region and what you know about your legislators:

“Hi my name is _______________, and I am a resident of (CITY/TOWN). I'm a member of the Essex County Community Organization. I’m calling today to ask my state representative to vote YES for H.3456, the Work and Family Mobility Act when it comes to the House floor vote. All qualified drivers should be able to apply for a Massachusetts license, regardless of their immigration status. This bill promotes everyone’s safety, including 50+ endorsing law enforcement officials and their colleagues who need to know drivers’ identities. Massachusetts motorists who benefit when every driver is tested and insured. Many immigrants’ lives would be transformed by this bill, and everyone in the Commonwealth would have safer and more secure roads for it. The bill is also endorsed by many faith leaders, including the Massachusetts Catholic Conference which represents the four Catholic Dioceses in Massachusetts. ”

Join Us Outside the State House (if things move forward as expected)

If things continue forward as we hope, we will be gathering with coalition partners from across the state outside the State House on Tuesday or Wednesday morning to express our support before the vote. We will send another update regarding this on Monday if it is moving forward.
